Richard Costanza was born in 1969 in Syracuse, New York. He received his undergraduate degree from Campbell University, where he studied history. While there, he was a member of the wrestling team. He then went on to attend the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1994.

After law school, Mr. Costanza began his legal career as an associate at a prominent law firm in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where he gained valuable experience in civil litigation, criminal defense, family law, and personal injury and wrongful death litigation. In 1997, he founded his law firm, the Law Office of Richard J. Costanza, P.A., where he has been practicing law ever since.

Throughout his career, Mr. Costanza has represented clients in a wide range of legal matters, including complex civil litigation, criminal defense, and family law cases. He has a deep understanding of the law and a passion for helping his clients navigate the legal system. Mr. Costanza is known for his aggressive representation of his clients and his commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for them. In 2007, Mr. Costanza earned recognition as a Board-Certified Specialist in Criminal Law by the North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization.

In 2011, he was approved by the Office of the Appellate Defender to receive appointments for appellate clients, which has led to him being the attorney of record for approximately 60 appeals. Mr. Costanza has presented oral arguments multiple times to the North Carolina Supreme Court and North Carolina Court of Appeals. He is the past-President of Judicial District 19B, and from 2015-2023, he served as his district’s representative to the North Carolina State Bar Council, where he helped to regulate the practice of law and protect the public from bad actors in the legal profession. In 2023, he was recertified as a specialist in State Criminal Law for the third time. Additionally, he served for over 10 years as the administrator of the indigent list in Moore County, reflecting his commitment to public service and the defense of those accused of crimes.

Dana Costanza is a dedicated law office practice manager who brings a unique perspective to her role, due to her past training and work history as a social worker. Dana understands the importance of compassion, empathy, and understanding when it comes to helping clients navigate the legal system.

Dana attended North Carolina State University where she graduated with her Bachelor of Social Work.  While there she was a member of the Epsilon Kappa Chapter of Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society. Dana worked with child protective services as well as the North Carolina Department of Public Safety-Probation and Parole prior to her role as practice manager at the firm.  She has also worked in other capacities within the criminal justice system.  

Dana’s passion for helping people eventually led her to the legal field, where she found that her skills as a social worker were highly valued. As a law office practice manager, Dana is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office, managing staff, and ensuring that clients receive the highest level of service.

One of Dana’s greatest strengths is her ability to connect with clients on a personal level. She understands that legal issues can be incredibly stressful and overwhelming, and she takes the time to listen to their concerns and to provide them with the support they need. Her expertise in social work also enables her to identify when clients may be struggling with underlying issues that may be affecting their legal situation, such as mental health concerns, substance abuse issues, and relational problems. She often helps clients find suitable treatment placement options to mitigate their criminal charges.  

Dana also works with the firm’s personal injury and wrongful death clients.  As a personal injury paralegal, Dana is responsible for working with clients, conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and assisting Mr. Costanza in preparing for trials. She is also responsible for communicating with insurance companies, medical providers, and other parties involved in a personal injury case.

Dana is known for her exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle complex legal issues. She is a passionate advocate for the firm’s clients and takes pride in ensuring that their rights are protected and that they receive the compensation they are entitled to.

Meet Summer Sands, a paralegal with a passion for criminal law. Summer is a native of Moore County who has been working in the legal industry for years and has honed her skills in criminal law. She is a magna cum laude graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with specific emphasis in criminal justice. Summer assists Mr. Costanza at the District Court level.

In her role at the firm, Summer is responsible for conducting legal research, managing case files, drafting legal documents, and assisting attorneys in trial preparation. She is detail-oriented and takes pride in ensuring that all aspects of a case are thoroughly investigated and prepared.

Summer’s experience in criminal law ranges from minor traffic offenses to serious felony cases. She is familiar with the criminal justice system and has developed strong relationships with court personnel.  Her ability to work under pressure, her attention to detail, and her commitment to delivering high-quality work make her an integral member of our legal team.

When she is not working, Summer enjoys spending time with her family and friends.  She also enjoys reading legal thrillers and attending continuing education seminars to stay up to date on the latest legal developments in criminal law.

Julia Hogan is an experienced and passionate paralegal. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English with a double minor in political science and psychology from Appalachian State University. Julia assists Mr. Costanza in criminal defense at the Superior Court level. She also manages the firm’s traffic court matters.

She is known for her considerable multitasking skills and for helping clients by providing passionate support to the attorney and the firm’s clients. Julia assists clients by providing regular contact and updates on their cases, managing the discovery process, and assisting in the drafting of pleadings, discovery responses, and document preparation. Julia ensures that Mr. Costanza is prepared for case management conferences, sentencing hearings, and trials.

Julia plays a key role in helping to ensure that clients receive fair and just outcomes by providing valuable support and assistance to Mr. Costanza and the firm’s clients to ensure justice is served. With her extensive legal knowledge, attention to detail, and strong communication skills, she plays an essential role in the fair and efficient administration of criminal justice.
